Am considering 1985 JD 850 23-hp diesel tractor, less than 800 hrs. (good) but no equipment (not good). Will view tractor tonite; seller asking $6800., might take less. Is this a good buy, given "average" condition and maintenance? also, since NFE with tractor, what about availability of add-on loader attachment
1. are they generally available?
2. what loader models will fit the 850?
3. about what $$ might I expect to pay for loader attachment?

Thanks to all for your thoughts.

I bought an 850 with 2000 hours for $5500, so with the low hours on your tractor, it seems like a fair price. After I bought this tractor, I bought an Alamo SMC loader (painted green) which fit the tractor perfectly for about $3200 new. I did quite a bit of searching on the web, and it appears that the aftermarket loader market has combined into 1 or a few companies. JD doesn't sell a loader for this tractor anymore. If memory serves me correct, SMC, Alamo, Rhino are all the same company now. I tried to get a Rhino loader directly from a local Rhino distributor, but they refused to sell to me, only wanted to go through a dealer. My $3200 price was for me to pick up the loader and install it myself. They wanted an extra $200 to install it. It wasn't hard, but required some muscle as I didn't have a loader or forklift to lift the thing from the trailer to the ground.
