I rebuilt a Wico C mag with new coil, pts, cond, rotor, and bushings.also new front cap. When I run it on the test stand it seems to have less spark than it did with the old parts. I have taken it apart and put it back to gether to double check everything. But no change. What could I have missed or should I look for? Thanks I hate to throw away $100.

New condensers tend to be crap.Test your old condensers on an rc bridge,if they test good ,use them.

34gp, Check the copper grounding tabs on back side of the larger square cap on your Wico C. Those copper contacts there must be clean and make contact for proper grounding of the points and condenser. Your condenser should test .16-.20 microfarads (mfd) on a condenser or capacitor tester. If you put in a electronic capacitor you need at least one with a 600V rating. 200V or 400V will work but not very long. You put in new bushings but make sure you have at least some air gap between the magnet and poles. If not loosen the screws and get .010"-.025" gap. If bushings were out before and magnet was dragging get the magnet recharged too. If you have a Wico C housing that does not have the 3 mark on the side indicating it was post WWII housing check the rotor bushing tube in housing to make sure it is not loose also. If it's loose the housing is scrap and will let the magnet rub. I agree with the others on trying to change the points setting also and make sure the moving contact is not rubbing or hitting something. That is why I was talking about grinding or filing some of the block away before. Clean contacts and check for good clean connections.

Check condensor capacity. I would guess it is too high for the "C" coil. We have all had a problem. The capacity should be .16-.18 microfads. the new wico are running .50-.70. Go to Radio Shack and wire in a .20 capacitor. Earl

Sounds like your tester may be off to me. What kind of tester are you using? If anything the Wico XHD and C condensers I been getting read a bit too low. No Wicos even use a condenser reading that high. A few Bosch and Bendix aircraft and industrial ones did though. Mark's has some .22 mfd 630V capacitors that work well for substitutes.

Try opening up the point gap to .018" then try putting your old cond. or another one back in.
