Going in the morning with my brother to look at the M I posted a pic of earlier this week.We are taking a gallon or so of gas,a gallon of oil(to be on the safe side) and a set of jumper cables. One problem I know of already is the tractor is 6 volt, and he doesnt want to buy a 6 volt unless he buys it,then he'll probably change it to 12 volt since it will be working tractor. Our problem is cant jump 12 V to 6 V,right,so will it be OK if I jump straight to the starter until it runs? Any probelms that the M is known for engine wise? TIA

I've never had a problem with the 6 volt system in my M. I did have the generator rebuilt when I first got it. As far as jerk starting it, I would make sure the engine is loose, I've seen a lot of good but stuck engines destroyed by this less than intelligent manuver. Lastly I've never seen an M with anything but a battery/distributer ignition. I saw a picture of a prototype M in Hobb's little giants book that had a mag though.

If this tractor has battery ignition, a distributor, instead of a mag like a lot of the Waterloo tractors, you will need 6 volts to feed the coil to make it run. Just a thought.

I would much prefer to pull start it, rather than slapping 12 volts across a 6 volt battery in unknown condition. Even a 6 volt battery is capable of putting out several hundred amps, i.e. welding currents.

Why convert to 12-volt when the 6-volt system will work just fine, if done as it should be? A lot of expense for very little (if any) benefit.

Benefit here is 6 volt batteries are hard to come by for some reason, and when you do find them local they are expensive, not to mention finding a 6 volt charger local.

I get my 6V batteries either at Sam's Club (under $30) or the local auto parts place (under $35). I start my 420 at temps down towards zero F and don't usually have any problems. Make sure everything is good shape and use the correct gauge cables, not 12V from WalMart and you won't have any problems. Also, The Dubuque tractors are known to have starter problems, so be sure the Bendix is in good shape. they always stop in the same crank position, so that section of the ring gear takes a beating.

Sams,BJs and one other place have 6 volt batts for 85 each, not varying much between those.Place like Autozone,Advance, and the like dont carry them around here. Independents wont carry them because they dont sell enough of them, and specialty stores are expensive as well. For us,its just cheaper in the long run t ochange to 12 volt.I dop a ppreciate all the thoguhts. Thanks!

Another optioon is to use an 8volt battery. It gives more cranking power but will work with the 6 volt system
