Need to start looking for a loader tractor to move/stack 1100lb round bales with. I'm not going to be working this tractor hard. Moving/stacking bales, pulling rake, and running a bush hog. I have a 4020 to do the heavier work. I welcome your suggestion/opinions. Thanks

I would just use the 4020. We used a 4020 powershift with loader for a few years moving large round bales & sileage. The only modification we made was to install implement tires on the front end for more floatation as the standard ribbed tires sank too much. Worked good, didn't cost much, lasted a long time.

We have a 5410 FWA with a 541 loader....it works great. It will lift way more than 2500# and is super manuverable. To fit your requirements I would look for a used 5200/5300 or their 5210/5310 newer counterparts used with Front wheel assist and a reverser is a real plus. Put that with a loader and you have one heck of a tractor. Very fuel efficient and little maintainence. We've had good luck with ours. I really like their short wheelbase.,.it makes them really manuverable. The older JD's like 40, 50, and 55 series are not quite so manuveralbe and had a few issues in the front axles with seals and such....but were good tractors too.

My suggestions....

Yes, the 3-cylinder engine 5000 series tractors are a bit more manuverable than the 4-cylinder engine models, but the trade off is that the longer wheel base of the 4-cylinder engine tractor models is more stable and requires less rear ballast. I fully agree, the MFWD is a really good feature on any loader tractor.

I used a 4020 gas tractor with a loader to move 1500# roundbales and with in 2 weeks of moving hay i cracked the rims where the bolt holes are. I would get the fwd tractor they have what seems like heaver rims and front ends.

20k new or used?
I have a loader on a 4230 and use it for large round bales, spear in front and forks on the back. I like the feeling of having a bigger tractor to do that work so the tail won't wag the dog. I think your 4020 would be good. Spend the money on attachments for the loader.

I have a JD 2020 and JD 2150 that I move 800-1000lb round bales with. They are very handy tractors. You just need to make sure you have enough ballest in the rear end. I have a 541 loader on my 2150 an you can take it on and off in less then 5 minutes. This is also very handy when you don't need the loader and you have other jobs to do. The JD 541 loader was a little salty @ about $6000 with material bucket, pallet forks and bale spike and joystick control, but it sure saves time.
My 2 cents,
Matt

I agree that the 4020 does make a good loader tractor, especially for moving bales and such. But for heavy loader work, a tractor with Front Wheel Assist is ideal. For 20K, I would think you could get a nice, newer 55-65HP tractor and if you get FWA, I would imagine you would end up using that tractor more than your 4020.

Just my .02

Jon

Operators are hard on spindles ! I have a 4020 gas with a 158 loader I think rated to lift 4000 lbs and I have lifted up to max weight many times. I also have planty of weight on the back for counterbalance, tires loaded and a 9ft blade on the back. When moving a load I just don't rush around.
