Tractor has the 4020 kit, injection pump has 370 head I believe, pump has been spruced up by a diesel shop. What kind of horsepower can be obtained with the 4430 size turbo? And what is the biggest size turbo this engine will handle, and what kind of horsepower will I be able to reach?

I have a 1964 4020 , old style (big injectors) like a 4010 . I put a 4440 camshaft in , 4440 intake manifold , M&W turbo kit with a 3LD279 Schwitzer turbo (basically the same turbo as used on an IH 12-1456). Pump is a .370 head from some AC industrial application . Stock lines . stock JD 3 ring pistons and later style harder head bolts . Did this 20 years ago . This combination will put out 200-220hp , seen it at 200 a couple times on a dyno , but don't hold it there TOO LONG . I pulled it 20-25 pulls/yr back then , probably 5-6 pulls nowdays . In that time I took out one headgasket and scored one piston . I put a used sleeve and piston in , have a couple buckets full that I have collected over the years . Your clutch has to be in GOOD shape , the guys used to use 5020 springs with washers behind them . Mine is a powershift and I set the pressure up a few pounds to prevent clutch pack slippage . I pull 120hp 12,000# dyno classes in 2-3 gear and 10-12,000# 3000rpm open hp classes in 4th gear. Last Thurs night at local county fair I got 4th place out of 12 in 12,000-3000rpm class . Hot 966 was 1st , our 4430 2nd , 966 3rd , me 4th , another 4020 set up like mine 5th . There was about 6ft between me and the front . Saturday the boy got 2nd with the 4020 in a 120hp 12,000 class . Rest of the year I run it at 120 , put a couple hundred hrs a year on it mowing , spraying , spreading manure and other odd jobs around here .

After the exhaust temp exceeds 1500F measured before the turbo. About zero HP when it goes bang-clunk.

Take it for what it's worth. I know a guy who just rebuilt his motor and dyno'd 127hp. It was the highest the mechanic ever seen w/ just a turned up pump. Mine puts out 109. Need to rebuild it this winter though. Know of another putting out 115 and another at about 113. All just by turning up the pump.

Without o-ringing the head, and installing a stud kit,and water injection, about all you will get out of it is around 125-130,with some slight pump mods, and that is if the rest of the engine is in tip top shape. All a bigger charger will do is increase boost to the point of melting pistons, blowing head gaskets and probably hurting performance. To make a bigger charger work, will require special pump mods, different injectors, the above mentioned head mods, and flow work on the head. Don't let someone tell you they are getting 175-200HP out of a basicly stock 4010/4020 with a turbo and pump mods.
