My LA has the serial number plate intact but it has at least one coat of paint over it, and looks like some rust bubbling up through the paint. How should I go about cleaning it up with out destroying it? It appears to be good and solid. Are the numbers painted on? If I take it off how do I reattach it?

Thanks for any help. I'm itching to find out what year I have.

If you have to remove it, the rivets are available through the jd dealers and don't try to drill out the old rivets, just drill the housing the appropriate size but moved up or down a 1/16 of an inch. This will still hide the old hole. The housing is really easy to drill.

It should be a alum or steel plate with indented #'s they are not painted on the tag as that would be too easy to tamper with, it should be just like any other plate, just take a wire brush and clean the paint off it, or use paint remover, you would have to remove the rivets from the axle housing and get new ones to re attach the plate, I wouldn't remove it .

Hi - Whatever you do, don't take it off !!! The rivet material they use is almost impossible to drill to re-mount it. Are the actual numbers stamped on ? if they are, and you want to preserve the painted section, I've had success with a spray of carb cleaner on a cloth, and keep wiping with this until you get the desired result. Good luck !

It doesn't look like their stamped on as I can't see or feel any raised numbers. If their painted on, I'm afraid that anything I use to remove the green paint will damage the plate.

If it's in the year you think it is, it is probably a steel tag that the numbers have pretty much rusted off of. I have one, we've always guessed it's a '41 or '42, and it is the same way.
The plate is in tact, but the numbers are unreadable.
