I don't even know if this can be answered. In the 25-40 hp range, what was the most durable 2-cylinder JD made?

My first two cylinder was a 520 about 10 years ago. I bought it from the old farmer that I bought my farm from. I knew him for a year or two before buying his tractor. He has since passed away but I can still hear him say, "John Deere didn't know what they had when they stopped making that tractor. The 520 is the best tractor they built".

The first tractor I owned was a Farmall C that I had rebuilt. I really liked that C but now that I had the 520 I thought; now I have a REAL tractor! Three point hitch, loader, hydraulic remote, power steering, etc. Comparing the Farmall C with the 520; huge difference in tractors. Just comparing the oil fill caps; the C has a tin cap slips on and weighs a few ounces. The 520 has a cast iron cap screws on and weighs probably close to a pound. Don't get me wrong I still like my little C, still use it to rake hay. Sorry for getting off track, the original question wasn't about comparing colors.

It has been a GREAT tractor! It has a 45 loader which was used to move round bales. It has never failed to start evening the coldest Missouri winter days. I still use it to load smaller round bales. Its will balanced with the loader, the hydraulic system is amazingly strong.

No. 1 cylinder plug did foul on me a month or so ago. I replaced the plug and thought it would be fun to see how slow it would idle. I held the throttle closed. Don't know exactly how slow it ran but I bet it was well under 100 rpm and it never stalled.

I don't think you will find a hard fast answer but just personal opinions.

There are guys that swear by the 2010. I've heard that if you had a good one you couldn't break it and if you had a bad one you couldn't fix it.

The one that received proper maintenance and care, and wasn't abused. All the JD two-bangers were pretty tough and durable.

For example: I think a JD model B would take more of a beating than a JD 420 due to low engine RPM & I suspect a stronger gear train.

What do u mean in durable? Technically, all old tractors are durable if the lasted to this day and age...

Mechanical items break & more so if pushed hard. What 2-cylinder JD would last longest without failure nwith proper maintenance?

I would guess some factors would be low engine RPM & large strong gears in the drivetrain.

that is a difficult question, seems like if you took care of them they were all durable. If you didn't they wore out or fell apart. I have my dad's 1938 G he bought new in 1938, still runs good when it gets the chance. I used to see a number of As and Bs sitting where they died in the field, usually from neglect. Somehow I would bet on the letter series as most durable.

I like my model 60, as for being better than other two cyl's I really can't comment. I can say that it works very well, has 3pt and PS. Pulls an 84 inch finish mower in tall grass, in 2nd gear with no problems. Starts easy, and runs great. It is easy to work on. It burns about 2 gals of fuel per hr when being worked, and about half that when just "putting" around. It isn't as comfortable as a 520/620 -- but doesn't cost as much either. I have a model 45 laoder that I converted to hyd dump, and I replaced the 40" bucket with a 60" that I built from scratch. As for being a loader tractor, it isn't all that handy, but I knew that going into the deal. But she is a good all around tractor, that is both unique and dependable.

Best regards,

Tom Working the old 2 cyl in Northcentral PA
