I need to have the injuction pump rebuilt on my JD 5020. It has a roosa Master injuction pump. I have been given a price between $400, and $500.This includes the seals on the drive also. Does this sound about right? The pump has a plastic part failing inside, and is making small flakes that are plugging up the check ball on the discharge back to the tank. It still runs, but I have been told if I continue to run it bad things happen. I figure if I look for a used pump, I am looking for the same problem. Thanks for any input. Stan in calif

Re: Vernon Roosa - the man in reply to 37 chief, 10-17-2005 14:27:18
I once had the good fortune to meet and spend most of a day with Vernon Roosa, inventor of the Roosa master pump. What an inventive genius! He told a story of being at lunch with a friend who bet him that he couldn't invent a toilet valve/float assembly that would have a manufacturing cost of $1.00 or less. Vernon won the bet! It's on the market, of course for a good deal more than the one-time manufacturing cost of $1.00, and has no machined parts. It's all molded plastic. He was on retainer from Stanadine at the time I met him and apparently was making pretty good money. He told another story of being at a sports show, seeing a "boat" he liked it and offered payment on the spot of something over $50,000 with his credit card. The seller refused the credit card so Vernon was back in a few minutes with $50,000 in greenbacks! Vernon was a true gentleman and simply inspiring to be around.

I just replaced the injection pump and injectors on one of our 4020s with remanufactured/rebuilt units from a pump shop in Mississipi(Mylex)whose link was provided by HTR.

Injection pump $550 plus $150 core/1 yr. warranty
Injectors(pencil)$20 plus $10 core/90 day warranty

Mylexs workmanship seems quite decent, I was really impresssed with the cleanliness and packaging of the components when they arrived. Cleanliness when dealing with fuel injection components is essential so it was nice to see the added attention to detail. As for function, the 4020 now starts, runs and pulls great. I recommend their services.

Glen

You're absolutely correct. The Roosa-Masters are pretty famous for the governor weight ring coming apart, which is what you're describing. $400-$500 sounds about right for a rebuild job on your pump. Prices range from about $600-$700 for a rebuilt unit on an exchange basis. There's not much to those units, and years ago, it was pretty common for dealerships to rebuild them. Now with high labor rates, it's more cost-effective to send them to a pump shop or keep rebuilt ones on hand. And of course on a lot of the newer fuel-injection pieces, they HAVE to be serviced at a certified shop. I'd also highly recommend pulling and testing your nozzles. Those pencil nozzles are pretty darn cheap, relatively speaking, and they may as well be up to snuff if you're spending the money on the pump.

What I don't understand is the price difference in getting a JDB pump from a 4020 done as compared to the DB2 pump from a Chevy or Ford truck? They are all Roosamaster/Stanadyne pumps, takes the same time and labor to take them apart and put back together, parts cost the same, yet I can buy rebuilt Roosamaster pumps for 6.2 Chevys or 6.9 Fords for $275-$325. In regard to the plastic governor weight retainer ring, it can be completely eliminated if desired for an extra $45 with an OEM Rooasmaster/Stanadyne part as used in the DB2s. Also, in regard to dealers doing the work themselves at one time. I worked for several dealers where we did our own pump work - sometimes in the shop and sometimes out in the field if necessary. The JDB, DB, C, or CB pump can be pulled apart and put back together in one hour. If it has to be mounted on a test-stand and adjusted and performance checked, it all takes much longer. But, many pumps, especially the DBs or JDBs have nothing wrong with them except for the shattered plastic ring and a blown out regulator stop. One hour's work (not including removal and reinstallation) and $35 in parts certainly beats spending $500 if it's not necessary. In regard to the pencil injectors, they are not rebuildable. At best, they can be cleaned, the seats lapped a bit, and the pressure checked and/or set - but that's it. They won't last anywhere near as long as a new one. Unlike the full size injectors, the individual parts are not replaceble.

The Roosa-Masters are dirt simple, that's a fact. The problem is a lot of technicians coming out of tech school get next to no fuel systems instruction, and seem to be taught that injection pumps are "magic". I feel very fortunate that when going through school, we got a whole quarter of nothing but fuel systems - Cummins PT, Detroit Diesel, Roosa-Master, and a bunch more. When working for a Cat dealer, I took a fuel-systems class where we learned scroll-metering, sleeve- metering and new scroll-metering. I've done pump and governor work in the field, but not for many years. Unfortunately, with the current trend of remove and replace, which shows no likelihood of ending, it's hard to stay current on that stuff.
