I know about nothin' regarding tractors beyond vintage 'green is likely good'. I live on a mini-farm to live far from a city.

I got a small JD 420 with loader for clean up tasks around & in the animal barn plus winter snow maintenance in north MI. Also has a rear tiller attachment. My lawn & garden tractor was just too small for the snows we get up here and the rear tiller was just a toy.

Next spring, I plan to plow 5-7 acres of loam type soil to restart a small neglected hay field.

Do I have an excuse to get a second tractor like a larger JD 620? Or is the 420 all the tractor I need for both tasks. I do not care for breaking something in the 420 drivetrain by over-working it. Sometimes a repair costs as much as the tractor.

Whoah, from the time I was 5 until the time I moved off the mountain we farmed a multi use hillside clay farm with a 2N Ford. Bout 16 acres in cultivation for feed for the livwestock.

Everybody needs another tractor though. :-}

I use a set of 2-14"s behind my 420 in this clay we call soil in SE Indiana. You shouldn"t have any trouble with them in a good loam, assuming you have enough weight to get traction. Put some good weight on that front end too. My TOM on the 420 doesn"t work as well as it should and running a 3-pt. tiller over plowed ground leaves a wavy mess. It"s bad enough planting a garden in it, but I"d hate to try to cut hay in it.

Sorry, but I think the 420 would be just about right for your job. Now you have to think up another excuse to buy that 620...

I"ve been thinking that my 420 is too big for some jobs. I need to buy an L....

Not an L. They are too cheap. What you really need is a 330! Kinda tough to convince the wife that you need to spend that much for a little tractor.

Get on and off that 420 10 times a day and you'll be begging for that 620!!! Plus, it will sound like a Deere of yesteryear. Those Dubuque tractors are cute and seem to hold their value, but you can't compare it to the waterloo tractors for sound and nostalgia. (Don't beat me I'm sure there are Dubuque nuts out there too).

I admit those old large displacement twins kind of talk to ya.

C'mon. Asking us if you should buy another tractor is like asking a drunk if he wants another beer.

The 420 will handle the work fine but that's not the answer you were hoping for was it! ;-)

Go get that 620.

That is funny. I did not know others got excited when someone else buys a tractor.

A good 420 will pull 2-14" plows just fine. For no more ground than you are going to cover that should be fine. However a 620 with maybe 3-16" plows would be much more fun. It's your budget, you decide.

I even doubt that the 620 would burn much more gas (gallons per hour) than the 420.

Is that a 420 lawn & garden type tractor or the old 2cyl. putt putt type ? If you have the old putt putt type 420 that should be more than enough tractor to handle plowing 7 acres.

420U is a 3000 lb tractor built in 1956-58.

Very good machines you should have no problem with only 7 acres. I wouldn't be surprized that you could pull a 2 bottom plow faster with the 420 than a 3 bottom with the 620.

Go for the 620. If you have a 620 in sight, and can convince the "little woman" that you need more tractor to handle the heavy work, follow through. I'm willing to wager that you will never regret it. All Deere enthusiasts should have a Waterloo built tractor.
