Just did a head rebuild on a 37 A and I am getting white smoke out the exhaust until it warms up and also I am seeing a little aintfreeze leaking aroung the manifold. I am thinking that it is coming up from the 4 manifold studs. I have read before that these studs need to be coated with permatex are lock tight to keep antifreeze from seeping past the threads when the manifold is bolted to the head.. What is the best one to use on these threads? Thanks, Jim

Jim,
I had fluid leaking out along the head stud thread roots (between the nut and the stud) on my "D". It leaked into the tappet case - VERY BAD, and out of a couple on the outside of the tappet case - not so bad.
I took it all apart again and sealed the studs with Permatex #567 high temperature thread sealer, which was recommedned by the company.
When disassembling the engine, I cleaned up the threads on the stiuds and nuts with a die and tap. I think they may have been made to be a tight or interference fit so my "thread-chasing" may have made the problem worse.

Good Luck,
Jon

Had a 1945 B do the same thing with new bolts and gaskets. After a short time, it took care of itself and stopped leaking. Probably plugged itself with the minerals from the water. Pipe fittings, and the like, tend to do that.

I've been using permatex high tack in the brush top can. It's resistant to antifreeze, fuels, oils, propane, & natural gas. www.permatex.com

I had that happen on my 44B, I put teflon tape on the bolt and some silcone on the bolt also, put it back and it has never leaked again. Did that about 4 years ago. Good Luck Ben
