I"m having problems keeping my clutch from slipping on my 35 A. I"ve had the entire clutch rebuilt. New dogs, T-bolts, 2 new facing disks, etc. Whenever I adjust all 3 castle nuts evenly, and the clutch engaged, I can grab the clutch pulley and try to turn crankshaft, it does and doesn"t slip. After I get on tractor and try to stop it using brakes, it stops and keeps idling versus trying to bog down. Also, going up hills the clutch disengages. I"ve got the castle nuts in about as far as I can go. The top of the castle nuts are past the second hole on the bolts. I don"t think I can actually bring the plate in any tighter. I"m really confused as to why I can"t get this to work. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

One other thing to check on.....

I once encountered a '50 A that acted much as you describe. Clutch never worked well & required constant tinkering.

Turned out someone years earlier had put it together with parts out of an early styled (prior to 585000) A. They'd fit in the pulley but they would not work right. Suggest you check out your part numbers using a correct parts listing for your tractor. You just never know what you'll find in these old critters.

You MAY be victim of a similar substitution. Given the right parts that A became a very reliable and well behaved tractor for many years.

Yes, it does have a snap when engaging the clutch. Although not a strong one. I've also tried washers behind castlenuts, but I've tightened the castlenuts about as tight as I can get them. I've also been through the parts manual and got the collar in the correct grove behind the clutch as well as all other parts in the order they show. Is it possible, the driver disk could be worn down on the sides. I'd never heard of this being a reason, but wasn't sure?

!951G Just a thought,is the driving disk on the splines tight? How about the thickness of the new disks compared to the old ones? Did the clutch work OK before the rebuild? Wish we could help more. Let us know what you find. Ron Mn.

Thanks again for your help. Actually the tractor wasn't all together when I got it. I had to get parts as I went along. I got the driver on the crankshaft pretty tight as well as lining it up with the one short spline. I didn't have any old disks, but the new ones I got were from John Deere. I also checked to see if oil was getting on disks, but didn't see anything other than disk dust when I removed the clutch dust cover.

The clutch should be tight enough so the clutch lever snaps in to engage. Are all the parts assembled correctly? Ron Mn.

I have heard of having to use a washer behide the castle nuts to bring it tighter, but I would say take a look at the clutch page on www.retiredtractors.com it shows the whole thing about a B which is the same as your A.
