I'm restoring a friend's 36B and the oil filter wasn't on the tractor when I got it. He ordered one from Napa and also didn't have the cap that screws on bottom of main case that holds filter. I tried one from an A and the cap matches hole perfect but I run out of thread on the stud coming out of filter housing and the cap is still about 1/2" from mating. Not sure what's wrong here. I looked at size of paper filter and it appeared to be same length as an A filter that I've got. I thought the A and B filters were the same size. Can someone help me with this one? Thanks.

To install a paper filter in a tractor that previously used a brass filter, you need to install an oil filter outlet as it is called in the parts book. Part# AA2096. It is a round sheet metal tube 1" in diameter, 4 1/2" long with a 3 1/2" washer on it.It is driven up into the pump cover to take the place of the brass filter.Ypur paper filter will then be tight when the filter cap is installed. Don't overtighten the cap, as you can strip the threads in the filter housing.

Just guessing here but any ways. On my 1935 B you can't use a paper filter, I tried and found them to be to long etc. But my B also has the type of filter you just wash and reinstall. I can get you the JD part number for the filter on my B but I hate to open up the manual. For some reason the manual is a little fragile. But it did come with the tractor.
