Im having problems with my 4020D. After its hot (been used) it wont turn over. Ive put 2 new 550cca batteries on it. The starter doesnt have that much time on a rebuild, and I have every confidence in the rebuild, guy that did it is sharp. It wont even give a crank over any idea

I'll have to look at my O.M., but isn't there a lever that will disable some part of the hydraulics making it easier to turn over when starting? As to the starter, I'd just take it to the rebuild guy and have him load test it.

Why was it rebuilt in the first place, and how do your cables look.

I tend to agree with Mike. Sounds like there could be an issue with the starter, and when it gets heat-soaked, it's not capable of cranking the engine. Make sure you're getting full voltage to the starter positive and start terminals, etc.

Not saying this is the problem but even the best rebuilder can have problems beyond his control. He has to buy his parts somewhere and could of gotten some bad ones. I had a 3010 starter rebuilt once. Got a call from the owner a few weeks later said it won't start. Turns out the rebuilt armature went bad and you could hear it spinning on the shaft. The rebuilder and I both lost money on that one.

It should crank easier when warmed up, which is when he's having problems. Sounds like a starter issue. Possibly a field coil with high resistance that gets worse when hot.

i read on here somewhere to jerk the steering wheel while cranking to release some of the pressure??? is that for real?

Cranking the steering wheel while cranking the engine takes the main hydraulic pump "out of stroke". Since the Deeres use a constant-pressure hydraulic system, the pump is always trying to maintain 2200 or so psi of pressure in the hydraulic system. That causes a drag on the engine and starter at startup. Cranking the wheel is kind of a band-aid for other problems, as they should crank just fine without cranking the wheel if everything is in good working order.

Actually Gman, turning the steering wheel causes the pump to go into stroke and when the wheel is turned, the pump is not building enough pressure to go out of stroke. Its in an almost free wheeling mode at that point.
IF the starter doesn't want to turn when hot,I would suspect the cables are corroded and corroded cables will break down and not flow all the current available fromthe batteries.Look for bulges in the cable insulation as a clue.

Yes, but seeing as how most people aren't familiar with exactly how the pump works in a Deere, it's easier to call it "destroking". In fact, Mother Deere refers to the screw-in and electric "destroking" valves, does she not?

yes it is for real to move the stearing wheel to release hyd pump preasher and allso take all preasher off remoats.right after i overhauled one of my 4010s years ago it would lock up like u said and i would let it sit for 15to30minits and it would turn over easy.never did find out why if it was from pisted drag or what but now it never bothers after 12to15 hundred hours on it.over hauled one this summer and works fine so maybe somebody els has an idee.

After I had my 4010 D rebuild 3 or 4 years ago I also had that same start problem. It went away after brake in. Guess I wasn't the only one.
