I know 39-40B's have different engine part numbers than the 41-46B. I'm need to if a 41-46B head will fit on the 39-40B and any difference the heads. I also thought they had the same bore and stroke. I didn't why the engine and internal parts had different parts numbers. if worse came to worse could you transfer a block from 41-46B to 39-40B? Thanks any help would be appreciated

'39-'40 are all together different breed of B. Yours has a flat head similar but different than an unstyled B. The later ones '41 or '42 all the way up to the end have a sunken head with ramps on the valve ports.

Jim,

I did a little comparing with the parts book. The 39-40 valve cover had an oil trough to lubricate he rocker arms. A tube from the governor feeds the valve cover trough and drips oil on the rockers. 41 up used pressurized oil through a passage in the block. To solve that problem you would have to either replace the block or find a way to run a tube through the oil return passage in the existing block to feed the rockers. But don't know if the bolt pattern between the older block and newer head will line up. Either way, you would need to tap into the oil lines in the case.

The manifold is also different after 39-40 so you would probably need the mainfold to match the head installed. If you found a manifold used after SN 183971 (PN B2179R) you would need to replace the exhaust pipe.

If you change the block, looks like the upper water pipe and housing is different.

Seems changing on item would cause a domino effect.

It just occurred to me to check and see if the push rods changed. The rods and rocker arms were the same from SN 60000 through the end of production. The only real change I can see is with the camshaft at SN 201,000. Looks like the valve train geometry didn't change.

Jim; Looks like nobody is going to tackle your problem,so I will give you what I have found which isn't much. The heads are the same from 39 to 41, and then the numbers change. I don't know if it is something in the valve train or what. If it were me, I would lay the head you want to put on there beside the other, and see that the bolt pattern was the same, also the water channels. I suspect the difference lies here as this is when they went to using 2 replaceable pushrod tubes instead of 4, Good Luck

The 40 B has a cracked head and i have a 46B parts tractor with complete engine. I guess i was wondering what the difference is in the two engines Thanks
