I could not get the clutch drive disk off the crank. Several rounds of heat and HEAVY duty pullers. I tried to use the cutting torch to split the disk in half, but cast iron just melts. Now I have goobered up the splines with cast iron, and I still can't get the pulley off the end of the crank. Do I have to cut the pulley off, cut the crankshaft off or what? Can a machine shop clean up these splines if I can get the pulley off, or should I scrap the whole thing and buy a new crank and clutch pulley? What a mess. Thank you.

Thanks for all the good advice. I should have asked before I got so frustrated and turned to the torch! I broke 3 pullers, one was brand new 10 ton hydraulic--now I can't find replacement parts and the internet store I bought it from, "Brandsonsale", refuses to return my calls. But that's another story. The wife wonders why I work so hard in the shop, only to come back into the house cursing that old iron! It must be a disease. thanks again.

Not it is time to stop and look at things.... If the crank is just spattered with slag, it should still be good.. Same for the clutchdrum.. DON'T damage that clutchdrum,,,,!!! They are really expensive and Hard to find..

Carefully work an angle-gringer in there and split the driver as much as you can... I suppose there is no way left to get a puller on it..?? If you can..put one hell of a pulling force on it and then HEAT the driver RED...it WILL come off...assuming the retaining washer is removed from under the bolt at the end of the crank..!!

Take your time and don't get in a hurry..!!! Ron..

Now is the time to listen to the guys like Ron! Otherwise you are headed toward creating a parts tractor.

To remove castings like that I have already cut a notch at the front edge, and used a pneumatic rivet gun with a muffler chisel to split it. If you've gone this far you probably are beyond any more heat helping you. Keep the casting cold and t should fracture.

The thin style cut off discs for stainless to fit your 4 1/2" or 5" grinder works well to cut a slit in things to relieve it from a shaft. Use them a lot to cut off old bearings from shafts without the torch mess.

What all did you un-bolt before trying to pull the driving disk off? How many ton was the pulley rated at? Is there a rental place wihtin a days drive that has hydraulic pullers? What kind of torch, tip and fuel where you using to heat the driving disk?

try using a "Sawsall" and cut the disc off, I dont think you can get the crank hot enough to "Weld' the stuff together, thak a punch or chisel and try to chip it off the the splines.
some aftermarket suppliers have over sized discs avalable. Or the crank come out on the clutch side put it in a big press with lots of penatrationg ( I cant spell) oil. Good luck Butch
