I have the usual jumpy problem with this clutch. I have adjusted and re-adjusted. The plates are new when I restored it. I have completely disassembled and all parts look great. In adjusting I either have no engage or it jumps like heck. I was in Moline (JD Restoration Shop)last year, and they gave me some cupped washers or shims that they said would help. Where do they go? I put them under the castle nuts, and made no difference. Any help?? The tractor is not usable this way except in 1st or 2nd. Thanks

Yea, my 520 is like that...!!

I take the outer cover and pressure plate off and paint an "X" right across the entier friction surface (on both sides) with spray Graphite..like you can get a "TSC" for helping grain slide.. I find that this lasts for up to a year and really does eliminate the "Jerks" in my 520.. I am sure it will help your "50".. Funny how the JD "B"'s don't seem to have this problem..!!!

Ron..

Thats a great idea and meets all of the requirements. Quick, easy, and affordable. All this tractor does is parade, load and unload off the trailer and sit. Yes and I have a 49 B and the clutch is so sweet in it, and smooth. Go figure. Thanks !

Oh yes, and I did try the slipping the clutch technique in a high gear and did not help either. Just forgot to put in initial thread.

Find 3 (#8 hard)lockwashers to put under castle nuts (one on each), snug clean castle nuts down on clean deburred adjuster bolts until clutch lever pops over center, then use a beam style inch pound torque wrench to adjust to even settings.

Its always worked for me.

Good Luck,
Mel

Also, when you adjust the clutch, just turn the castle nuts one slot at a time. You can get them pretty even by counting the threads showing above the nuts, if they're not even it will be jerky.

WELL...I tried the inch pound thing, and I tried the graphite thing, and even tried the lock nut thing, and it is just as bad as it ever was. Look for a show quality 50 with a jumpy clutch on Ebay soon. If 50's are notorious for jumpy clutches, I dont want one in my collection. Tired of working on it 10 hours for every hour of enjoyment... Thanks to all who tried to help.

Take the clutch all apart. There are floating disks way inside, You have to pull the seel like gear with the 2 threaded holes in it that is one the crank, it has a washer & a bolt holding it on.
you have to use a good puller. There are floating clutch rings in there 2 of them, They are broke I would say.

I am familiar with them and I think you may be correct. What have I got to lose, right? Thanks.

Jim When I do a clutch job I check it all over, Check the inside clutch disks, The adjusting bolts, Have had some with bad threads, Then they get replaced, When I put it all togeather I put new cuped washers under the adjusting nuts & with clutch lever forward I tork them all to the same tork & then adjust 1 notch at a time on the casulated nut.

Where do you get the cupped washers? I got my first set while in Moline. The JD restoration guys there just gave me a few to try. Where can I buy new ones now? Tx
