Getting better. The JS started quickly at 0 F this morning. Guess that 8-volt system conversion & fresh winter blended gasoline does work.

If you are using an 8 volt battery, what is your charging voltage and what voltage are you using on the ignition? I start my 420U down to well below zero on 6 volts. Good cables, decent starter and a cheap Sam's Club battery.

Use stock generator to charge. Adjusted regulator point gap & it charges up to 10 amps. I use 8 volts on 6 volt coil all last summer without an issue.

As long as the battery, cables, switch and connections are good enough to keep 5.5+ volts at the terminals and 5.0+volts at the starter motor and coil. There is no need to boost the voltage. I found out about winter starting the 40 one time. I had just bought a crank and we were bored on a bitter cold Christmas afternoon. We all trooped down to the shed to see if the crank would fit and if anybody could roll it over. I was hunched down eye level with the crank watching to see how it lined up etc. While giving her a slow test turn to check the fit all of a sudden there was a putt and a snort and the d*m thing was running. Seems my Father thought I was going to try starting it right away. He had turned the key on and pulled the choke. To be honest it almost startled me a little.
