I read the post about the 80 speed-hour meter. A&I doesn't appear to have a cable for a 620. Anybody know of a place other than JD to get one? Thanks.

When I used to work at the International truck dealership we had all the pieces to build up cables like those. Got any local truck shops ?

No offense intended here, but I just have to comment on that. How practical would that be, exactly? I doubt there's a truck repair shop in the country with a labor rate below $50 per hour, and probably closer to $100 per hour. So by the time you go to the truck shop, buy the pieces and then pay a technician to build the cable, IF they can even do so - a dollar gets you ten that they're going to go "huh?", are you going to be money ahead of simply buying it OTC at a Deere dealership? I'm a service technician, and I'd be the FIRST one to tell a guy it would cheaper to buy the cable built than dink around making one, even if it would potentially put money in my pocket.

You make a valid point. I guess it depends on the shop. Where I was the parts dept. (me) made them up no labor charge just the parts which were very reasonable. Same as hyd. hoses and battery cables, we also had all the parts to make the little gear boxes to increase or decrease speedo speeds.

I understand what you're saying, and like I said, no offense was intended. We're definitely in a throwaway world these days. I did my co-op in a International dealership, and we didn't do anything like that, but there may be some shops that do. And a dedicated speedo shop can probably do it. But I still bet with labor getting as high as it is throughout the automotive world, buying a new cable off the shelf is going to be cheapest.

I never knew such stuff existed until I worked there. I can't remember the name of the company we bought the supplies from ? I miss not being able to make up my own hoses and cables at 10% over cost ! I left that place right before they closed the doors. They still have other stores but not in our town.

Unless you're vehemently anti-Deere, you can get one from Deere for around $40, depending on tractor model and type of speed-hour meter. With the housing, it's around $51. Deere dealer should be able to have it overnight if not in stock. Or you can find one from the aftermarket somewhere, get a "deal" on it for maybe $30, wait at least a few days and pay $10 freight.

Thanks for the info Gman. I originally had priced one at JD and thought it was over $100. I must have mixed it up with some other part. For the extra $10, a guy just as well get the housing too. I have nothing against JD and usually get most of what I need there. I generally don't find their prices out of line.

Deere is as reasonable as anybody in the aftermarket on a lot of parts, and actually cheaper in many cases, too. I think a lot of the aftermarket outfits survive on two assumptions by parts purchasers - 1) It's probably not available through Deere anymore, and 2) It's got to be more expensive from Deere. As I said, it will depend on what tractor and speed-hour meter you have, but none of them should be substantially higher than the others.

Mine is a 620 GP. I was a bit hesitant about even getting a cable as I wasn't sure if the meter was still working. The cable was broken at the governor when I bought the tractor. I went out today and hooked a drill to the cable and the meter appears to work fine. Guess I will give it a try. I don't really need the meter, however, I like to have everything working.

You got luckier than I did, then. I have a "60" gasoline row-crop. I replaced the cable on it years ago. The cable was broken, but the meter still doesn't work properly.

If you want if overnight from Deere you are going to pay shipping charges also. I usually order my parts in on the stock order to avoid the extra charges.

The shipping charges will be minimal for a small item like that that doesn't weigh much. I can provide you with an exact cost for the part and shipping if you'd like.
