This morning in northern MI, it was -4F. The JD 420U with the 8-volt system started ok.

The starter was dragging a bit and the choke must be set just right. What I do is actually pull on the flexible choke cable to find that 'sweet spot' and it starts. Slowly 'hunt around' for best lower RPM once started.

Then, after a minute or so the engine picks up RPM with a few choke adjustments. After that 'minute', the engine is ready to make some power.

A small battery charger overnight would probally allow starting to -10F or perhaps even colder. Lower than -10F, I think I would stay inside my house.

Bottom line is the 420U is a good cold weather engine.

Got a 4020 gas and it seems to prefer the cold temps. It seems to pop off quicker when cold than hot out.

Jim,
I grew up on a 420. Hauled/spread munure 2X /day on Cent. WI dairy farm. We had a lean-to shed on No. side of barn where munure came out & tractor/spreader was kept. I do not ever remember a day when that tractor did not start. Even at - 30F. The 420 was later replaced by a 1020 special. I do remember times when the 1020 would not go. But that 1020 sure was a sweet ride. wish I had one today.
