1940 Model D

I have my Grandfather's 1940 hand start "D" which I keep in my garage and start/drive weekly. During the last month it has become increasingly difficult to steer. I thought the tires might be low, so I filled them to the proper psi, but it did not help.
What do I look for?

Thanks!

Good advice from Don about jacking it up to find out where your problem is. Those old cork seals in top of gear box on shaft can give up and let water right in there and if it doesn't run out bottom can cause problems. I've seen some D steering boxes with freeze damage. The bushing on bottom of shaft in trans can get real worn causing a bind on the gear in gear box. Take apart the gear box to clean it out and see what you find and pay attention to the gasket thickness as thick and thin gaskets are used to shim the gears. Just a thrust washer used under the gear in gear box but a felt seal used on shaft by steering arm. That shaft in gear box goes through a pipe tube in the transmission keeping it sealed off seperate. Get the box lubed up again and worn places fixed and back out the adjusting screw and then retighten some to see how it works then. When you got the steering rod loose check the king pins on front spindles too for wear and binding. Those can be fixed with new shafts and brass bushings if worn bad.

I have a 45 D and the other day I could not even budge the steering wheel. The temp was in the low teens and I suspect there is moisture in the steering box and she froze up.

You might jack up the front end and see how free she steers with out all the front end wt. Good luck
