Deere 2520 Synchro Transmission

I have a 2520 Deere, with synchro. The shifter is making gear noise when shifting along the "neutral" (left hand side of sliding motion) position between gears (5-7) and (6-8). I have to use the clutch for transmission lever to move without gear clash in that range.

The shift lever is on the dash.

Can anyone tell me what has happened or if it is ok to run?

It's NOT a power shift or quad range or shuttle shift transmission! Use the clutch! It is called a Synchro because it has synchronizers letting you shift smoothly WITH the clutch when throttling down between 1-3 and 2-5 and 4-7 and 6-8 and after stopping lets you use 1st reverse or 2nd reverse with the clutch.

I don't try to change gears without the clutch, but the gear lever causes gear clash when moving in the left hand side of the controls.

The forward gears actually change in the middle position and the reverse engages in the far right side of the control arrangement. The far left seems to be a "neutral" column. Is that correct, or should the clutch be depressed at all times while moving the gear lever when out of the "park" position?

Yes, You should have the clutch depressed whenever pulling the shifter out of park and not release the clutch until you have it in a gear. Some shafts in transmission are turning until clutch is depressed. You should be stopped when going from park to a range and also stopped when going from one range to another range to avoid the gear clashing. Should not be any gear clashing with clutch depressed and moving the shifter on left side of ranges. If so you could have rods out of adjustment or range shifters could be worn. One shifter rod is spring loaded. The bushing and pins on shifter lever can get worn too at the dash quadrant. JD service manuals and I&T shop manuals will tell you how to adjust the shifter linkage properly. A parts breakdown can be seen that JD Parts site parts books section by selecting model and entering 2520.

Thanks for your help. I have no gear clash except in the left side of the controls with the clutch disengaged (not depressed). I have no clash with the clutch engaged,so hopefully everything is OK.

Only one other question.

My reverse gears (both hi and low) seem to make a good bit of noise. I have no noise in any forward gear. Any comment on that?

I don't know about the reverse noise. Don't remember any of our 10 or 20 series having strange noises in reverse but I guess they did sound different in reverse. Have you changed oil yet or what kind are you using? We always tried to not use the 2nd reverse much except like when moving round bales.

I have changed it within the last year, but that did not seem to change the noise associated with reverse. I have owned this tractor for 6 years and it has always had noise in reverse, but I don"t know if it is "normal" or not.

Just don't know without hearing or seeing it. Ask around local at dealer who else they know of that has been in with same tractor for parts and maybe they can tell you if it sounds abnormal to check someone else tractor to see how it sounds. Maybe a bad bearing someplace or things just not in adjustment on shifter. Shouldn't have any loud howling or grinding noises. They do make more noise in 2nd reverse and the old early 10 series that had 3rd reverse but 20 series didn't have 3rd reverse. Also just a thought is how is the clutch condition. Under the cover on bottom is a grease zerk for clutch bearing also.
