I have several tractors made during the early 1940's. (World war II). The serial number plates are not legible. Are there serial numbers elsewhere? Any suggestions for restoring these numbers so they can be read?

You have probably already thought of this and it is a long shot, but her goes. If there were some way to ge a piece of writing paper (white and thin) placed over the serial plate take a soft lead pencil and just lightly mark over back and forth where the number should be or the whole plate if not to big. Sometimes you are able to discern what the number is. I have done this on similiar tags in the past and it has worked sometimes. Lots of luck.

The only way the numbers may be restored that I know of, and I say restored in a manner that means, "made discernable", would entail a technique used in crime labs. The tag would have to be removed, and is subjected to an acid bath that dissolves the metal around the serial #. The premise is that the metal where the number is stamped is more dense than the surrounding metal, and will dissolve more slowly, leaving the numerals in relief....this is the same technique used to "restore" serial numbers that have been ground off on stolen weapons.....DOWNSIDE:...the tag will be destroyed, and it is very difficult to find someone to do this work outside of a crime lab..and they generally don't have time to do custom jobs.....In a nutshell, just enjoy the tractor and don't get hung up on the serial #....

Sometimes you can remove the tag and read the numbers from the back side maybe if lucky. Only other way is to check options compared to a parts catalog. Not many later parts had casting dates on them.

The John Deere don't have the number anywhere else. Don't know about other colors. There are ways to get you close but thats all.
