I am putting an M&W turbo kit on my 4010, should I add an exhaust temperature gauge also? And what numbers should I be watching for on the high side?

Just putting the charger on should not raise the exhaust temperature considerably unless the pump is turned up.When the M&W kits were sold new, part of the kit was a new torque spring for the injection pump which raised the fuel delivery, and the exhaust temperature, which necessitated the pyrometer. If you do install a pyrometer, you shouldn't exceed 1000 degrees for an extended time.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the pyrometer? Is it used for measuring exhaust temperatures? Could you enlighten me, Thanks.

Hate to disagree with you but a turbo by itself will cause excessive heat.I once had a guy who hauled his 4020 200 miles so I could work on his injection pump. With a new M&W turbo he had installed himself, his exhaust temperature ran up around 1150-1200 at rated PTO speed. After I set the pump in came down to a safe level.I installed dozens of M&W turbos and always talked the customer into installing a pyrometer. The ten series was the only pump that had to have the leaf spring changed. All that was necessary on the 20 series was to remove the shims behind the leaf spring.Roller to rolled dimension was no problem on the twenty series pump.

The original ones are hard to find. I believe there was one on eBay about 8 months ago. We did not get it though and still need one if you find an extra.
