Hi there,

I got interested in the old two cylinder JD engines.
However some questions came to my mind.

Is the engine 2 or 4 stroke?
Is it direct or indirectly injected? What is the injection pressure? Does someone know of a exploded view of the 830 engine?

Thanks, John

you forgot the original 2cyl jd diesel- the model 'r'. same as the rest- but first is best. injection pumps run directly off camshaft, just fyi. one plunger pump per cyl. the r has only 2 main bearings, all the rest have 3. also they made an 840- industrial version of 830 with side-mounted operator station, specialized application. some had 1000rpm pto too. i'm going to put superchargers- 1 per cyl on my 'new' 840. off buick 3800's. the sound alone of a 2cyl jd under full load is worth thousands to us infected with the uncurable 2-cyl jd disease.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Are the valves operated by push rods?
I assume it are 2 valves per cylinder and they are located in the top of the cylinder had, am I correct?

That would be it.

Thanks, John

Yes, the valves are operated by push rods, two valves per cylinder. Since it is a horizontal engine, the valves are in the front of the cylinder head (but yeah, I'd call it the top too!)

All 2 cylinder John Deere diesel engines are 4 stroke cycle except the 435 which is a GM diesel and it is a 2 stroke cycle engine. The 70,720,730,80,820 & 830 diesels are direct injection diesels. The injector cracking pressure of the 2 cylinder ,4 stroke cycle engines was 2500 PSI when new.The misfit 1010 and 2010 diesels are both precombustion chambered diesels and the 3010 on up are all direct injection diesel engines.
