I bought an old style 4020 JD that has been converted over to a 3 terminal alternator (1,2 and battery). I'd like to know what color coded wires go to each numbers on the alternator. Any help would be appreciated.

i did this to my 4020d long time ago
the big one on the back is battery
run a jumper wire from battery terminal to #2 post.
run a wire from the gen light to terminal #1
that way it will have a dumy light too and be off whin the key is off.

Steve, sounds as though you have a Delco SI type alternator on there. One pin (I don't remember which) can be tied to the battery terminal. The other is connected to an indicator lamp. The lamp's other lead goes to the ignition switch "RUN" position. This second terminal energize the alternator to excite it. Any auto supply store should be able to advise which pins go where.
