This is very frustrating. I can only keep it running with the choke fully out. I've rebuilt the carb, replaced points, and checked out all ignition components, and ran compression check which showed good compression on all cylinders. It also looks like gas is getting into the oil. It starts very good, but even after it is fully warmed up, as soon as I ease in the choke it starts running rough and then dies. Anybody ever had this problem? Please help, I'm about to shoot the tractor!

Duane, My 620 was acting similar. It turned out to be outlet in gas tank restricted with little flakes of rust.

Duane, wonder if the float has a small hole in it?
also with the choke out and running is black smoke coming from the muffler? put my 1010 back together last nite and had very same problem as you. we only installed the clutch. tractor terrible to start. replaced points plugs cleaned carb. found out clutch must of not been lined up just right. we just broke back into reinstalled clutch and it runs perfect now. also did this problem just happen suddenly ?i'll think on this one cause i really like the 1010s

This tractor had sat for many years and I bought from a older man who sort of got it running enough to sell it to me. It has low hours (for a 61')but did sit out and was rusty. After fixing it up some - mostly cosmetic stuff - I used it this spring to bursh hog and did some plowing. It was pretty hard plowing in ground that had not been plowed for 20 years and had locust tree roots. Then the tractor sat for about a month a when I started using it for light brush hogging it gradually started running kinda rough. Several times it did seem to all of sudden start running good and would then go rough again. Then after a while I had to keep choke out all the way. Hope this helps and thanks much for help. Soon as I can I'll take the carb off and look at it and check the float for a leak.

If you have to keep the choke pulled the engine is starving for fuel. Remove the fuel line at the carb it should flow fuel freely. If not clean fuel line or blow back with air into tank. If that is ok you must have to low float level setting or what I think it is a plug main jet. Make shure the jet in the carb bowl is clean. Hope this helps

check the fitting in the carb. where the fuel line screws into. should be made with a screen type filter on the part that goes into the carb. but then again gas in the oil? i'll talk to a jd mechanic tonite and see what he says.

Yeah, this is a weird one. I've checked all the fuel filters and lines and they are all free and gas runs freely out of the carb when I remove the bowl drain plug. Thanks for your help. I'm baffled.
