I never been a good hand at that "If it aint broke dont fix it" advice, but Im beginning to wonder lol. I have (had) two real good air compressors, one a twin V two stage Ingersoll Rand (or is it a Dresser?? heck I 4 get) and the other a 5 HP 2 cylinder single stage and BOTH are fairly new and in good shape ran smooth n quiet not oil pumpers or noisy whatsoever. Sooooo oo last summer I get this wild hair to drain their oil and replace it with some of that expensive fancy shmancy Synthetic Compressor Oil. Seemed like a great idea at the time. ANYWHO in the past week BOTH BLEW UP. GRRRRR RRRRR RRRR one pretty much locked up I found both belts burned off, and the other has some slack n bump feel when it turns and it broke n spun the big pulley off the tapered keyed shaft.

See if I everrrrr r use expensive Synthetic Compressor Oil again

Anyone had similar problem with Synthetic Oil??? I use it religiously in my better cars n truck n motorhome, but now Im a lil nervous !!!!! !!!!

Ol John T

My mechanic has been using Amsoil compressor oil for 12 years now in his shop compressor. And we have been using the same Amsoil in the farm shaop compressor. Zero problems to date.

B&D:

Where do you buy Amsoil? I've seen it advertised on their website and such, but wondered if I ever made the change where I would buy it.

I moved my 855 over to JD Plus 50.

Also, what product of theirs do you use the compressor?

Frank

I'm a member and purchase right from the Amsoil warehouse in Mississauga when I'm passing through. Amsoil also ships via freight. Link

You probably already know this, but anyway, I just bought a 6 HP Ingersol-Rand compressor, and it came with a bottle of synthetic oil. They say if you don"t use that oil, the warranty is void.... I used a synthetic oil in my old (20 years) 3 HP Sears unit, and it still works fine (just not big enuff). So, you pays your money and takes your chances!

I've heard good and bad things about the synthetic compressor oil before and never tried it and not a fan of any synthetic lubricant unless it comes in it new and works good. What has worked well for me the last 4 or 5 years is just a regular 5W-30 Mobil "Drive Clean" oil in both my compressors. I use to put the 30W non detergent in them for summer and 20W for winter but much happier with the 5W-30 now with no problems yet and easy start up in winter.

T-30 Select is a "diester" with ISO 125 in lubricant class SL20-125.
XL-T30 is a "AO-Polyalphaolefin" with ISO 100 in lubricant class SL10-100.
If you used a "synthetic blend" with a ISO 68 in lubricant class SL60-68 it is inferior to T-30 Select and XL-T30. Some suggested substitutes for T-30 Select are: Chevron Tegra68, Conoco Syncon68, Keystone KSL719, Mobil Rarus SHC926, and Shell Madrella AS68
