I am getting ready to pull the exhaust manifold on my 4010 diesel. Is there any advantage to removing the bolts with a warm motor as opposed to a cold motor? Would like to remove bolts without breaking them off. Haven't tried the bolts yet, but was looking for input on what works best.

I am sure you have heard of heating something up with a torch to get bolts out. Well, the way it works is to heat the metal that the bolt is in without heating the bolt itself any more than possible. The metal then 'expands' and the cold bolt does not; this means that the hole is now bigger than the bolt and it should turn easier. So....you want as large a temperature differential as possible between the bolt and its housing. This suggests that you do it when things are cold so the bolt stays as cold as possible. This also works when installing tight tolerance things such as shear pins; 'freeze' the pins and not the housing and the pins will shrink and go in easier then as they heat up to the same temperature as the surrounding metal, they will expand and get tight.

A good hard wrap on the heads to get their attention helps too.

IF there is any question whether they will come out or not, I torch the bolt heads off and then use a pipe wrench and a lot of penetrating oil on the bolts. Its a lot better that twisting the bolt off in the head.A lot of times, there is just enough rust built up on the bolts that it will help cause them to twist off.

The manifold MAY be less likely to warp, if allowed to cool. I think the bolta will be about the same warm, or cool. They will either come out, or if badly rusted break off, either way.
