Duane i just bought a Edison CD mag for my unstyled G and it is different that my other one, it says Thomas A Edison Incorporated on it and on the other side it has a raised signature of Thomas Edison. My other mag just says Edison Splitdorf Cooporation on it. Is one of these mags older, is there any way to date them. Also where is a good place to get quality parts for R2 magnetos. Thanks

Nick Kruse

Nick,
A little history - Thomas Edison wanted to get into the radio business in the early '30's, but that required getting an RCA license (they had necessary patents) and RCA turned them down. So, Edison bought the Splitdorf Electrical Company in September 1932, which had the necessary license, and formed a subsidiary, Edison-Splitdorf, which took over manufacturing magnetos and spark plugs from the Splitdorf corporation. So we had E-S magnetos and spark plugs. Then on November 11, 1947 the Thomas A. Edison Inc. absorbed the Edison-Splitdorf subidiary, and Thomas A. Edison Inc continued to produce spark plugs and magnetos. After 1947 the E-S spark plugs became the Edison spark plugs, so I can imagine that the same change was applied to magnetos.

As to "quality parts" for the R2, I guess it depends on what you need. You might check with Mark's Magneto (860-887-1094), Mitch Malcolm at Lightning Magneto (218-367-2819), or Cork Groth (563-285-7009). They all make some parts.

I've seen the name and logo change on later E/S CD mag housings & RM mag name plates and you can tell from serial number they are later. A 1948 price sheet I have on those mags has Thomas A. Edison, Inc., Automotive Division on the top title while earlier price sheets say Edison Splitdorf Corporation. A E/S CD 2 mag with the impulse on it went for a whopping $58.00 back then.

Yes, FM-R2 and RV2 parts haven't been made since the 40s or 50s and last I have on them being made was in the 50s aftermarket handled by Niehoff then and you could could still get several parts then but those are all gone now. Agree with contacting the gentlemen above for parts for those. Sold all the R2 parts I had years ago to Cork.

Glen,
To finish the story, May 1, 1949 Wico absorbed the Edison magneto line, both manufacturing and distribution.

Then, "The Automotive Division has discontinued its spark plug business with the sale of its plant in Hellertown, PA in December 1950". Quote from the 1950 Annual Report of the T.A. Edison Inc. Turns out they sold it to Champion, who closed it in 1982 and it ended up being an EPA Superfund site and was scheduled for cleanup in 1990.

The Thomas A. Edison CD magnetos are not real common as they were only manufactured for less than a year and a half, while the E-S version was made from 1936 to the end of 1947.

Duane, Thanks for the very interesting history lesson. So did Wico just buy them out and sell the rest off over time or did Wico ever manufacture a few E/S mags also? Reason I ask is I still have some boxes of E/S parts as you probably do in the orange boxes that say Edison Splitdorf Wico on them and some E/S parts in the old blue Wico boxes. Something else I noticed on the earlier CD & RM mags is the housings were painted a olive green color originally as were the old Aero Dixie Splitdorf mags that everyone wants to polish the brass up on now. Seems like the later CD mags were just plain aluminum though with a black magnet that I find.
