I agree with Duane on the black ones too. I've had NOS JD ones in the past that were varnished black cloth covered with rubber insulation inside with metallic wire core. On my tractor though you would find new black silicone or fat yellow 8mm metallic wire core though and I don't care what the wire police say about that. lol. Most of the reproduction wires you see really aren't like the originals anyway and will fade bad in sunlight but the best new silicone types won't weather near as bad. I think Packard and some other companies made wire like the original you are seeking.

If you look through the Summit Racing site, there is "solid core" style ignition wire sets.

Duane; I'm asking because I'm not sure. We liquidated a John Deere dealership several years ago, and in doing so, we found a roll of braided, solid center plug wire. An old JD mechanic told me this was used on some very early unstyled Deeres. Do you know anything about this? Thanks. Dick

DickD,
I missed a set of AA478 and AA858 plug cables at a swap meet a couple of years ago. They were stranded-wire core, rubber insulated, with black woven cloth covering. One end had a hook for attaching to the plug and the other end had the usual brass end with rubber insulator cup for the magneto. They still had the tags on.

I have seen other wires, all of which were black woven cloth exterior, with a variety of ends. Some spark-plug ends had the hook, some had a fork, and some had a round circular wire-looking end. The other end depended on what magneto the wire was going on - some were unfinished wire for the Edison CD, others had the normal magneto brass end.

Plastic covered wire is later, I'm not sure when it started without some research. I have formed the opinion that wire with various color exteriors is a modern concept. I have never seen an old automotive catalog or tractor catalog where one was given a choice in color of plug wire. But, an opinion is just that.
