Im looking to buy a live hydraulic pump for my 41B. The kind that goes between the mag and gov. There are some on ebay and dont know how often there on there. How much do they normally go for in restored and unrestored condition? Also is there any alternative ways to get hydaulic such as a pto type unit?> If anyone has one and would like to sell it please post or email me at gerbel180@yahoo.com Thanks al

There are alternatives to the live pumps, I assume from your post that you have no hydraulics but apparently a PTO anyway. The advantage of the live pump is that it works with the clutch engaged. A pto pump will only work when pto is working which means clutch engaged, just depends upon what you want to do with it. I have seen hydraulic pumps that ran off of a sprocket bolted to the center of the flywheel and that were belt driven from the fan shaft. The one driven from the governor is probably the neatest setup, if you don't have hydraulics now you will need a valve and reservoir also.

I emailed the ebay seller and asked why he was including two two power trol gaskets and he said "HI: The reason for two two gaskets they go on each side of spacer, between power-trol & rockshaft housing. (spacer is needed to block existing hole from old hydraulic pump)This kit gives live hydraulic at power-trol. THANK YOU" I thought that this kit went between the mag and the dist and then ran lines back to say your disk or something. I dont understand what he is talking about as I havent messed w/ the hydrualics on a b yet. Please Explain!

Let me try to explain.

JD offered their tractors with an optional hyd. rockshaft that was driven with a pump built into the pto so your pto had to run to operate this and at that time the pto was not live. Or your tractor may of not had one of these it may have a pto only. If you had the hyd. rockshaft (most popular of the first uses was to lift up a mounted cultivator)and you wanted it to work LIVE as not to run the pto then they offered this kit. The complete list of parts is shown in the parts books for the A,B and I bet the G models. The pump went between the gov. and the mag. or dist. then hoses ran back into your existing hyd. valve and rockshaft housing. You also needed to remove the idler gear in your pto hyd. pump and also add that block off plate between your valve housing and the rockshaft housing this is where you need 2 gaskets 1 on each side of that plate.

Of course many a farmer /inventer bought just the pump only and hooked them up to their own homemade reserviors and plumbed in a seperate valve theirself etc. They could of ran any number of things some ran loaders,I've seen some hooked up to add on powersteering units. I've also seen hyd. pumps ran off the fanshaft and or flywheel.

I would like to do the last part. I have a rockshaft but I would like to get hydraulic outlets to lift a JD disk i recently got for free. It is a good addition to my tractor and my 2 bottom JD plow. SO I would have to get this pump and make a resevoir and a lever/valve? What is the best way in your opinion?

Ok I think I'm getting the picture. You have the hyd. rockshaft unit now. JD called this a power-lift no provisions for hyd. outlets for an external cyl. You have several options. JD made a conversion for these that required drilling and taping a hole in the back of your valve housing (square looking box on back)plus you had to install a different valve and a lever instead of the pedals. I doubt very much one of those is still around in NOS form. I have had many of those on parts tractors in the past. You could also use this conversion with the live hyd. pump set up.

Another way to convert yours to outlets is to buy the valve box part from a later B with power-trol from ser# 201,000 and up. Then it's just a matter of unbolting and switching your box out for the other one. Many were done this way. No other modification needed. I see these on e-bay or check your local junk yard.

Mike you are second to none! lol So If i get the the rockshaft unit of a newer b it would have live hydrualics and live outlets? What all parts would I need? Actual rockshafts, gears pumps, outlets? This has been an area of mass confusion for me but it is starting to clear up! How much do you think that would run me as my local junkyard is nothing but thiefs. They want triple what any other place wants but I am forced to go there because of large shipping cost from the cheaper places.

I still seem to have great difficulty with getting things clear over cyber space. LOL

The late B valve box will give you a place to hook up quick couplers for a remote cylinder and also the ability to raise and lower and stop the rockshaft or cyl. at any position. The pedal lift only lets you go full up or full down no in between. This still will not be LIVE power unless you also add the pump up at the gov. I think I saw a valve on ebay around $40.00 starting price. I'll go look and post back some item numbers so you can see a picture of what I'm telling you about.

I found some items at ebay so you can at least see them. Alot of this stuff comes and goes there at all kinds of prices.

# 7588248451 late style valve box from a power-trol. ad say ready to bolt on and go-- BEWARE it is missing the plugs in the back to block off the ports for rockshaft operation or even if it had them for cyl operation. The other one I found # 7586433294 was missing this stuff too.

Check out # 7584119291 I forgot about these they were made to fit JD's by Baker Valve co. I really have no experience with these and saw one once and only learned about them here at YT. One of these would maybe be the best set up. You hook it inbetween your existing set up and it will give you a place to hook up cyl. outlets. They go kinda high but are rare and I don't think you need anything else to operate. No special plugs like the JD units need and seem to be missing. These plugs will cost extra and you may end up with more in it than a Baker valve.

I'm going to have to stop by a friends house and see if he has any of this stuff laying around to sell. It would be a good idea to try the free classifieds here too.
