Need some help. Got some .045" oversize used cast iron pistons for my 1936 JD D Unstyled. When they arrived by UPS discovered both pistons had .005" oversize pins that were worn out. Have not been able to mic the pin holes, but sure they are also worn.
Question: Can a machine shop over bore and replace with bronze bushings to make the pistons serviceable. Thanks for your help. john h

I had a pair of cast G pistons the same way, I took to machine shop and they trued the pin holes up and made new ristpins from scratch, ended up about 300.00 Hope that helps DOUG

Thanks for all the info folks. For now, I have a temporary solution. After talking to the salvage people this morning, they are going to send a call tag for these pistons and send me another pair. Hopefully, the next pair will be more serviceable than the first. Relatively new to the antique tractor game, but learning fast. Takes a lot of patience and prudence.

BTW: I am new to posting to the JD discussion group, but have been monitoring and soaking up info from it for the last year, since I got my first antique tractor, a 1955 JD 60. Since Nov 2004, I have accumulated a 1944 Case SC, 1950 McCormick W-9, 1936 JD D and 1937 JD B, both JD's unstyled. Guess you may say I got bitten pretty bad. Love all these old tractors and still have the urge for more. However, with a small stable like mine it is hard enough to keep them maintained correctly, plus play with them as much as possible.

Another option you may want to look at is having the pins "hard chromed" to build them up enough so they will fit your pistons properly after the pin holes are honed back round/straight.

I have started on putting bushings in a set of aluminum pistons to fix a pin hole problem, and putting bushings in is not as easy as it sounds, but it can be done. A problem you will run into is when you bore out the pin hole to put a bushing in, you are removing material that holds the snap ring in place. So then your choices are to recut the snapring grove for a bigger diameter snap ring or make pin buttons to keep the wrist pin in place. Which route you take depends on how adventureous your machinist wants to be and what kind of equipment he is working with.
