I know this has been answered a million times and I am probably just slow but I'm confused.

I have read the methods of timing a mag on an unstyled A and seems like they always say the left side goes to the top. However- in the A operator's manual it says to ground the lower plug opening and trip the mag to fire when the left side is at the left impulse. Is that because they were using an obsolete mag? Mine has a Wico X. Maybe I am just not reading it right. Thanks.

Excellent, you guys are terrific. The mag looks beautiful- redone by Roberts, great job but takes a long time!

Jim, I dont thinks its so much a matter of any "obsolete mag" you questioned, maybe just a technical wording thing and perhaps the manual was written trying to be a "catch all" for all the different mags avaialble on that tractor. The Wico C and X are direct drive (turn same RPM as crank) and fire at BOTH TDC's Power and Exhaust, while some other like the Fairbanks Morse and Wico AP (I think, that right Glen??) are reduction gear driven and only fire on the Power TDC's. On the direct drive mags when you use the flywheels Left hand Impulse timing mark (to set them to fire at TDC), it dont matter if its Power or Exhaust, but timing on the reduction gear mags does. I still thought they all were configured Top terminal to left cylinder n Bottom to right, however.

The grounding the plugs or plug wires is so theres a shorting path for the coils discharge to reduce chances of harming the mags.

Best wishes,

John T

Hi Jim, The unstyled A book may be telling how to time with a Wico AP or Edison mag? Leave spark plugs out while timing to turn it easier. Yes, you want the LH cylinder, # 1 up on TDC compression when the LH impulse flywheel mark is in line with cover mark at 3 o'clock position. Then make sure the governor drive slots for the mag drive are in horizontal position also. Then turn the mag CCW while having a wire in the top # 1 cap terminal of the Wico XH or C mag and after it trips impulse and fires stop and that it the position to have it installing it on the tractor then. Next after you have finger tightened the mag bolts rotate the mag forward towards front of tractor. Then slowly rotate the flywheel forward one turn until the marks LH Impulse line up with cover mark again and stop. Now tap the top of mag slowly and carefully towards the rear of tractor until you hear the impulse trip. Then stop and tighten the mag bolts. LH cylinder wire goes in top terminal and RH cylinder wire goes in bottom tower. On the Wico C and XH mags if you get it off 180 deg. you can just switch plug wires at the mag and it should run.
