Hi,

I just recently bought a john deere 140 which seems to be one problem after another. My newest problem is the wring going to the ignition switch had been poorly spliced together with the same colored wire making it imposible to trace the color of the wires to see how it is wired. into the ignition switch It had melted together were they had been spliced. Now my problem is I am not sure how to wire the ignition switch. I have a red/white wire, red, green, purple and two orange wires and only have 5 posts on the ignition. Would someone have a diagram they could share with me. Or send me an email how they are supposed to be wired. I would be very grateful for any help you can give me. Thanks a lot

There are at least 3 different electrical systems for that tractor, depending upon serial number.

You will have to post the serial number before we can help you.

And, the part number of the ignition switch will vary with the serial number.

Using the incorrect switch can fry the electrical system, especially if your's is in the range that used electronic igntion (10,001 - 22,400).

Thanks for the help

The highest serial number break for which I have a diagram is 22,401 - 30,000.

That series is conventional (Kettering) ignition, as is yours... #63,895.

I think the diagram I have would be very close to what you are working with, as the same ignition switch is used. (Deere # AM32318) The big difference is one cicuit breaker is used in the wire from the starter solenoid that feeds the ignition switch, rather than the 2 circuit breakers AFTER the ignition switch that the older units used.

Purple and white = cranking circuit... "S" on switch, then to PTO switch and neutral safety switch.

Red and white = battery power supply from battery cable side of starter solenoid, though ammeter (there may be a breaker in that line)... "B" on switch.

LT GRN = charging wire from center terminal on regulator... "R" on switch.

Orange and white = power FROM ignition switch TO accessories (lighter and headlamps)... "A" on ignition switch.

PINK = Wire to (+) terminal on ignition coil... "I" on switch.

Basically, you need battery power to "B" on the switch, continuity from the "S" terminal through the two neutral safety switches, to the starter solenoid, an a wire from the "I" terminal to the coil, and it should start and run.

If you would like me to scan the diagram I have, and email it to you, email me.
