Frank, I was looking at your website and I think I shall try your lye gravy. Is it safe to use on a hood? Also you said use red devil, so I went to the store and bought some. Got it home and was looking over it and it says CONTAINS NO LYE. Did I grab the wrong one or what? Thanks AL

Al:

Well, the stuff I use says "Red Devil" and under that it says in bold letters "LYE".

It ain't gonna be lye gravy unless you add Lye (Sodium Hydroxide).

I'd say you might have the wrong stuff.

Frank

And another lye source... in reply to F-I-T, 02-20-2006 17:47:18

Here is a drain cleaner that I found at Lowe's and Home Depot. It's 100% Sodium Hydroxide (Lye), so it will work really well in making lye gravy. The other product contains a large quantity of Phosphoric Acid, in case you are having problems locating it.

What are you using the lye for?

To remove some old paint. Hey Frank I forgot to ask you show it on a cast center, is it safe on sheet metal?

Oh sure. It will not affect steel at all. The only concern you will have is around aluminum, magnesium, pot metal, "white metals".

Van:

We use the lye for two different rust and paint removal processes. One is "electrolysis" and the other is a non-electrical home-made paint, oil, and grease remover that I call "Lye Gravy". I included a link to my web site where you can find the recipes.

I have had great luck removing paint and just about anything else with electrolysis. If it fits in the tank it will come out clean. I cant say enough about it i'm going to clean every part i can with that process.I'm working on a 40H i have been cooking parts in my celler all winter come spring i'll be ready to start putting it back together. Electrolysis cleans all the rust from every nook and cranny any greese that is on top comes off with it.
