Flywheel Movement

Right now I am in the process of building up the clutch splines on my crankshaft from my 41 b. I have that part ok but the flywheel has movement in and out not side to side, it also will no spin with out spinning the crank, so the only problem is in and out. Is this a big problem? The only thing I can see is the starter not engaging as it has grinded a few times because it didnt mesh with the flywheel. Do I need to fix and how I guess is the question?

So you are saying that some one reinstalled it and didnt tighten it down enough? So I should loosen the two bolts on the front and whack it? What about the bolts in the back do they have to get loosened? Thanks for the info. Also whats your email as I have some mag questions. Thanks, AL

If you're talking about a '41"B", those two outside bolts just hold the starter ratchet casting on. You need to loosen the "inside" pair of bolts to get the flywheel loose from on the crankshaft. Sometimes takes a special wrench.

This picture of from an "H" I believe, but the design is the same.

Well, you can loosen the outside ones, or remove them and the ratchet hub, but I'm not sure it will really help. It does remove some of the mass if you have to remove the flywheel. I think if you can get the back side bolts loosened, then move the flywheel, then re-torque them you should be all right.

Al, yeppers, if it has excess in n out end play then the flywheel wasnt ever pushed/driven on far enough onto the crank splines is my best guess. The two big flywheel clamp bolts are in the rear so she needs loosened up and the flywheel driven in about as far as she will go.

You may need to look at the ring gear on the flywheel.. It may be worn badly in one particular area.. On 2-Cylinder JD tractors, they usually come to a stop in roughly the same place every time... This means that the starter engages at roughly the same place every time, too..!! What works well, is to remove the flywheel and with good heat ( about 400 degrees) the ring gear will slide off by tapping lightly with a brass hammer..then rotating it 1/2 turn and putting it right back on..with the same heat.. SAME Side Out...!!!! Don't turn it over.. Ron..

41, the flywheel is supposed to be driven in (with mounting bolts loose of course) deep onto the crank splines almost all the way as far as possible until theres hardly any in/out end play, I think the spec is in the 0.010 range. What we do is have one guy hold a sledge tight against the big center end bolt over on the cluth drive disc side while a guy with an oak block drives the flywheel inward about as far as it will go so one can barely feel any end play with a good hard in n out tug on the flywheel. If the big flywheel bolts show any stretch, replace them and torque them down good n tight to spec (a lil tighter then Dicks hat band lol).
