Here is the followup on trouble I was having getting the lower shaft out of a 730 transmission. I had to make a tool to get the lock nut off. The tool is pictured. I also had to heat the lock nut with an acetyline torch to get it to break free. It took five attempts with the torch and about 500 foot pounds of torque to get it loose. Heating the nut probably compromised the adjacent roller bearing as some of the rollers got hot enough to change color. But I did finally get it all out of there. It the shafts and bearings are in really nice shape. The 2nd/5th gear will be replaced with a new one. Thanks to all who responded to my earlier post.

I suspect that pipe wrench wasn't made in China! What did you use to make the tool interface? Looks like you are ready to spend some significant money on your rebuild. Good luck with your restoration...JD 730s will never go out of demand.

The tool was made from a piece of bushing stock that I got from a friend who builds trailers. It machined easily but I tried to harden it before putting it to the test.

This tractor is an LP standard model and I am trying for a top quality case up restoration.

WOW ! That one was tight ! Was it crossthreaded or something ? Loctite maybe ?

I have torn down alot of 2 cyl. tractor trannies on parts tractors and repaired quite a few also and more often then not those nuts are loose from banging around in the field all those years. One never knows what you will find though.

Apparently it was just very tight. Once it started to turn, it went very easily and the threads are OK.

Here I am applying just a little torque to that lock nut. I definately tested the strength of my home made tool.
