Can anyone tell me the difference between these two tractors? In the JD tractor data book I can"t see any specs that differ between the two models. Without causing any arguments, which was supposed to be better?

The John Deere model 730 was available in row-crop, standard, or high-crop versions. The 730 was never tested at Nebraska, its performance is identical to the 720.

Comfort and sheet metal line changes mostly. The 30 series was never tested at Nebraska. Late 20 & 30 series had a different clutch pulley brake setup and different gear reduction cover also.

BA:

THe quick version is that there was a serial number break during the -20 series production what involved some engineering changes to the internals of the early "Green Dash" 720's which became the later "Black Dash" version. The "Black Dash" 720 and 730 are identical in terms of engine output. The only differences are sheet metal and decals.

Only one thing I'd add to what FIT said - the 730, with the new sheet metal and styling, also had a slanted steering pedestal with gauges and slanted plastic steering wheel. I grew up on a 720D (green dash) and am now restoring a 730D. You'll enjoy either one. I think a hardcore biker could even enjoy the sound of a 720D/730D or 820D/830D at idle as much as their Harley. Of course, that's just my opinion.

I was told once that a 720 had 3 main crank bearings and a 730 had 4. Just hear say, thought I would mention it. JOE

It would have been tough to put a 4th bearing in given that you have two rods, which leave you with two ends and a center for bearings.
