i put a five gallon bucket stuffed full of old burlap bags in line between my shop vac and my booth and it helped save the shop vac filter. just bore the right diameter holes in the bucket and push pipes in. off set the holes so that the air has to be sucked through the bags to get to shop vac.

My grandfather got black lung disease from breathing coal dust years before we knew what we know now about breathing stuff like paint additives, and all sorts of other stuff. I would recommend you try to find a correct vacuum/filter/dust collection/ evacuation system for your health. Another place you could try would be www.skatblast.com . They also sell lots of different kinds of abrasives from glass beads, walnut shells, aluminum oxide, even plastic.

Glass beads will make less dust and aluminum oxide a bit more than the glass beads. Just use some mesh filter or piece of scotchbrite for a inlet air filter on the blast cabinet and use a regular old shop vac for dust removal.
