I have a 4010 and I"ve had the injectors and pump rebuilt. Before I took the pump out I set the flywheel at 14btc as the book said. At the pump window the lines were about 1/16 apart. After I put the pump back in I had to move the flywheel almost to tdc to get the pump lines in order. I could move the flywheel back to 14btc and the lines stayed in line. Has anyone else had the problem and what needs to be done to fix it?

The original pump was timed to 14 degrees BTDC. If the pump has been changed, or updated to the "4020 style", it will be timed to "0". Do you know which pump you have?

As for turning the engine back and forth, and watching the marks, that is USELESS, due to ALL the play in the timing gears, oil pump drive gears, and pump drive all adding up.

You NEVER turn it backwards when setting the timing, only forwards, as this eliminates the "slop" in the drives, and indicates where the pump timing actually is when it's turning over.

What a dummy I am. Of course you would only turn the engine one direction. Thanks. The pump has the following numbers on it. Roosa Master DBGVC 631-1Aj S.N.332055. then there is AR-26372-R. Does this help in determining if it is an update. The tractor was bought used so who knows. Thanks again.

Jerry

sounds like you are in a situation like mine. I'm not sure where mine should best be timed.

John
