My 530 had a transmission clunk noise when going from coasting to pulling. Not knowing for sure what it was, I couldn't live with it. So I pulled it apart and found that the rivets that hold the ring gear on the differential were loose. The loose rivets allowed the ring gear to slip a little and that was the source of my "clunk" noise. I bet it only moved about .030". But that would translate into an inch or two on the back wheels. I can order new rivets and washers from Deere. But I'm not sure how I'm going to set those rivets. It was clear that the original manufacturing process used a heavy duty press of some sort. Any suggestions from you experts out there?

No gear damage in this transmission. All the gears look exceptionally good. Whatever gear lube was used left a black coating on everything that looks bad but did a good job of protection.

That was JD's SCL type gear lube it was discontinued in the 80's ? because of the lead in it. SCL stood for sulfur clorine lead.

Nasty stinky stuff for sure ,BUT about any tranny that still has it in is usually not got rust or rust pits in the gears or bearings. I refilled some of my tractors with the stuff after restoring them back in the 70's and 80's that SCL lube sure does like to creep around and out.

Is there a chunk off a spider gear?

I fist thought the same thing, but after stareing at it for awhile and refocusing my eyes I think it is an optical illusion. What looks like the top of a tooth is actually the groove at the bottom. Stare at it some more and see if it changes.

Riveting tools and hammering heads are available for air hammers from auto supplies and tool places and do a nice job if you can support the back side well. Can always grind your own from a worn out air chiesel too.

I did some of those in a 440 crawler finals once and just used a ball pein hammer and support the other side on something solid. You can do alot of smashing with a hammer !
