I just got a JD 7000 planter and do not have a manual. Figured out plant population but do not know optimal planting speed. Jim

Francis Childs, who has fallen from good graces, said he would place a can of not quite full soda pop on a planter box and start planting. If the can fell off, he was going too fast.

Thanks fellas for the information. The 7000 planter is a slick piece of equipment. I followed your recommendations for speed and here are the results:
Planted 32 acres this afternoon in 5 hours. This averaged 4.18 miles per hour for total time. Row length averaged 14 rows per acre and row width was 38 inches. I think tractor was operating at about 4.5 miles per hour. I did stop several times to monitor seed corn levels and add the last two bags. Planted 9.7 bags of Dekalb DKC69-71 at 80,000 seed count for a plant population of 24250 per acre. I had targeted a plant population of 26000. The trials I did before I started planting, indicated a plant spacing of 6.2 inches. The result at the end of the day, if you use the bag seed count as "Gospel", was a greater plant spacing at about 6.8 inches. Overall it was a good afternoon with "ZERO" equipment problems and only a cup or so of corn difference between the hoppers at the end of the day. Thanks again, Jim

Sometimes plant population is off because of uneven or inadequate tire pressure. Memory says it should be 32 psi, but check the operator manual when you get one.

We go 4.75-5.00 slower is better than faster because of faster sdeeds causes the seed to roll as it hits the ground. The seed tubes are designed so the seed has zero forward velocity at5 mph according to Deere engineers.we have done numerous test and 4.75-5.00 is optimum speed.Too fast results in doubles and skips. The worlds record for bushels per acre was planted at 1.5 mph on a Gps.Steve

I run mine at 5mph and get a nice drop, the finger pickup will underplant at slow speeds and over plant at high speeds
