Hello guys:

I"m still having trouble. I"ve posted twice on here and saw someone else post once on this issue. I"m wanting to know how/where to check the tranny/rear end oil in a 730 row crop. I"ve looked on the left hand side of the tractor around the transmission by the brake drum and on the axle housing but have been unsuccessful about finding a check plug or a 3/8" square headed plug. I really need to check the level before i start spring plowing with it. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

that "black oil" could be that GOOD orginial lead based gear oil--wonder if you can still buy that stuff, like maybe imported from some country that isn't afraid of lead??

What you are looking for is a hex head bolt that takes a 9/16 or 5/8 wrench I forget which. It will be on the LH side of the tranny case about half way between the flywheel cover and the rear axle housing. And about half way up.If it is a diesel model I think it is kinda hidden behind the hyd. oil pipes that run to the pump in the bottom of the engine case. Happy hunting. Post back if you do or do not find it and maybe I can get a picture of my 720 D for you.

I have found a bolt with a lead or copper washer. The bolt head was 9/16" and it was behind the pipes, between the brake drum and flywheel cover, but about 3/4 the way down the tranny case. I pulled the bolt and black oil came out that appeared to be diesel engine oil so i put the bolt back in. I then checked the engine oil dipstick and the engine oil apeared in the same place it was before. How much oil does the tranny/rear end hold? What is the proper grade to run, is 90wt gear oil fine?

Thanks!

It sure sounds like you got it ! 90 WT or more should work fine. I can't remember for sure but I think 8 Gallons ?

Those tractor models are also masters at mixing oils and makeing oil levels raise where you don't want them. As a matter of fact I'd be more surprized if it didn't mix engine oil in the tranny and tranny oil into the pto because the oil seals get really hard after all those years. That heavy gear oil in a pto is hard on the pto clutch facings. If you drain it you should find 2 drain plugs 1 is in the botom center of the case kinda below where the gear shifter area is. The other should be offset a little and back under the rear axles you may need to move the drawbar over to get to it.
