How can you tell if a solenoid mounted on a starter is a 6volt or 12volt? I have a 12Volt battery wired to solenoid now and was thinking they originally came out with 6volt wiring, but wasn't sure if it had been changed over the years. This is for a 47 JD AR but which has magneto on it.

No battery or generator was on it when I got it. The solenoid makes the armature come out and turn the flywheel some, but sounds like it's making a clicking noise within the solenoid. That's the reason I was asking. I wasn't sure if I was burning up solenoid with the 12v battery hooked up to it. I'll check it out some more. Thanks for the replies.

You make no mention of trouble. I wonder if it matters? Is the failing in any respect? If it's working on a twelve-volt system it's carrying less current thru the contacts than it will at six volts. Also the coil will only draw half the current at twelve volts but it might not develop enough flux to pull in the armature.

The Delco 000760 starter used on earlier AR was originally 6 volt. It would have also originally been positive ground and solenoid would have been 6 volt as well as the generator. Later AR used a different 12V starter and mounting with 2 6V batteries for 12V and no solenoid with just a switch connected to rod and lever arrangement. Did yours have a 12V battery on it when you got it? If no markings on solenoid about all you can do is see how fast it spins on 6V. If not fast enough on 6V then someone may have converted it to 12V ? How many volts does your generator put out ?? Do some checking and you can figure out if it was converted or not.
