'52 JD A doesn't indicate oil level

I'm not sure if I have a problem or not. I bought a 1952 JD A with roll-a-matic from a dealer back in January and drove it three hours home. It was freshly serviced and ran great and had oil pressure the whole trip home. After I got home I checked the oil level via the hole in the crankcase and nothing came out so I added a quart. And another, and another. I was sick, but after 12 quarts I finally got flow through the check hole. I blessed out the dealer for failing to fill the crankcase after draining the oil, but since nothing seemed damaged, I thought it might work out. I decided to service the tractor anyway and when I went to drain the main reduction gear cover, I got 2.5 gallons. I blessed the dealer out again for filling the wrong hole when they serviced the tractor. A few weeks ago I checked the oil level via the hole and it was low so I added a quart, and another, and another. I stopped after 5 quarts without getting oil at the check hole. I've checked various forums and it wasn't obvious to me why the oil wasn't returning from the main reduction gear cover to the crankcase. My friends and I tore the side of the tractor down tonight and we're still not sure why the oil doesn't return. And then one guy noticed that the tractor front is 4 inches higher than the rear, due in part to the roll-a-matic. His theory is that the tilt is causing the oil to sit in the rear of the crankcase, and in the main reduction gear cover, and not show up in the check hole. Does this seem like a reasonable explanation? If true, is this a problem and what needs to be done to fix it? The tires seem to be stock. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Usually the extra engine oil getting into the reduction cover gets picked up by the gear and gets slung over the divider in the reduction cover and then there is a drain hole whichs puts it back into the crankcase. At least that's what I remember ? Mine always seemed to get a little over full from this. A real loose main may cause extra oil to go into there but I'd think after all that extra oil poured in there it would level off ? I also remember some models (I don't know where I saw them for sure) having a stamped tin piece of metal bolted on in the reduction gear area to maybe help divert some extra oil too. I'd have to examine the parts book on your year A to see if it needs one of these. It may be a few days before I can check it out.

The oil in the 1st reduction cover is Transmission oil and drains into the transmission..if it moves from that area at all.!! Crankcase oil has nothing to do with the 1st reduction, unless the Rt side Main Bearing seal is out, and if it is, you may need to change the Rt side Main bearing if it has too much clearance.. My JD 630 didn't even knock, and that Rt side main had .076" clearance...!!

Reduction gear covers had engine oil in them up until the models 50,60,70 came out and from then on they used gear oil and the seal you are talking about. That is why your 630 uses gear oil , BUT an A does not.

Almost all Deere lettered series set high in front. The A or B with front mounted bedders, where the rear tires set another six to ten inches lower, really set high. This won't be your problem I don't think. You may need to look in the transmission and see if it is not way over full. Sounds like the oil is getting in there as there is lots of extra room in there. I think it should have 27 quarts if I remember right. Drain and catch it and see if you don't have more than that.
