I have been unsuccessful in finding a replacement for the large ball bearing on the left side of the upper shaft in a 730 transmission. So naturally I thought I would ask here one more time. It is JD part number JD8556, but on the bearing it is identified as New Departure 1213A. It measures 120mm outside, 60mm inside, and 23mm thick. I have worked with my JD dealer and several major bearing supply houses, none of which can come up with a replacement. According to my research, all 720 and 730 tractors used this same bearing (almost 60,000 tractors not counting those made south of the border). So if anyone has a suggestion, I certainly would appreciate it.

I have attached the text of an email reply from an inquery about this bearing from Shuster Corporation. They claim they have a replacement bearing, but it is expensive. I am still going to look at my old bearing and try to determine it's condition before spending $245.00. I also need to locate replacements for the needle bearings that don't have races and make sure my shafts are okay. Are you replacing all bearings? Do you have part numbers for the needle bearings?

Hope this is helpful.

Kamal

Subject: Replacement Bearing

Do you guys have a replacement for a New Departure 1213A bearing? This bearing is a ball bearing with the following dimensions, 60 mm ID, 120 mm OD and 23 MM wide. Thanks for the help. Kamal Shouman

Any luck yet finding this bearing?

I am afraid I a just about to have the same trouble you are having. I have a 730D and I just tore the transmission down and was about to start looking for replacement bearings. Your old bearing doesn’t look too bad. I am going to take a close look at my old one tonight to see if it can be reused, but would prefer to find a new one. Let me know what solution you came up with, and I will do the same.

Good luck

Thanks much to all who responded. I got a message from Greg Stephan of The Old Tractor Company and he confirmed that availability of this bearing has been a problem for the last 15 years. 720 and 730 owners take note. He suggested using the bearing with the slightly larger inside diameter and making a spacer to press fit into the bearing. OhioDeere's suggestion of putting the spacer on the outside would actually be a little easier for me to do myself. That would however be just a little smaller bearing and it would be nice to know if the load carrying capacity is compromised at all. I'll probably attempt one or the other of these suggestions about spacers and we'll see if my lathe work is up to the task. Again, thanks everyone for taking time to help me out.

Let me help you..
according to my bearing books everyone is right.. today you will be able to find a "standard" radial ball bearing in the 60bore x 110od x 22w size.. i recommend you have a machine shop make you a spacer sleeve to fit the outside of this bearing to bring you to 120mm. this sleeve would have a .197" wall thickness. if made to a shrink fit (say around .003" smaller) heat it up and slide it around the bearing od this would be adequate. when it cools it will be awful tight. This is a common practice and poses no problems. care must be made when installing in the transmission so that when its tapped into the hole in the transmission you don't beat the bearing out of the sleeve.. hopes this help..

Don't know about the 730 but Detroit Ball Bearing has helped me out with every bearing I have ever needed on -A-, -B-, and -H-'s that I have worked on. Usually at least 1/2 the price, sometimes a 1/3 the price of Deere. They even got me an all steel govenor bearing where Deere could only get me the plastic one. Actually the parts guy at the dealership told me about them. Don't know where you are located but I am sure they have a web site.

I got 1 for mine back in 1985 ? and when I rebuilt another 730 and needed one in around 1995 ? you couldn't buy them anymore. My old one wasn't too bad from my tractor and I had saved it so I put it in the other tractor.Sure does pay to save this stuff. If you can't find a good used one today then I would try to find one the same on the outside or inside and machine a spacer to take up the gap on the shaft or the housing. There has to be something close. I had to do this with an oil seal on a D brake shaft.

I did think about pressing a 2.5mm wall thickness spacer into the BCA bearing. I was concerened about a press in spacer staying properly centered in the bearing. I'll have to look at that again. Maybe that is a possibility if I ultimately can't come up with an exact match.

Press it in with some loctite stud and bearing mount and I think it should stay put. Or could you have the shaft built up ?

Check with this place in Dallas if you haven't already. They show to have a BCA by that 1213A number or can locate one for you.

This is one of the places I tried, actually the first place. They crossed it to the BCA bearing and sent me one. But, as I said above, the inside diameter was 5mm to big. I actually sent them the old bearing so they could try to match it by the demensions. Still no luck. They said they did a search of other sites, but still couldn't find one.

Ok, I checked some NOS bearings I had on shelf at shop and they were different too. One was a BCA and it had the same width and ID as yours but was only 90mm on O.D. So could a spacer sleeve be used on outside OD also ?

I actually had one of the BCA bearings like what you found there. And I know that the bearing supply places tend to cross the JD part number over to the BCA bearing. But there is a mistake because the BCA bearing has a 65mm inside diameter. The actual size is 60mm. The BCA bearing does match on the outside diameter and the thickness.
