Questions About Fan Shaft

I have a couple of questions regarding the cooling fan on my "45 A. I"m curious as to whether it"s possible to remove the fan and shaft without moving the radiator, or at least, moving the radiator.
The other question is in regards to the fan clutch. Mine is slipping (I can grab the fan blade and it will turn), so I"m wondering how long I can run it like this without causing major damage. I"m not talking about the obvious overheating possibility, but, is the fan designed so that it will just spin (if the clutch fails completely) or can it get off center when the clutch fails?

You can also go the other route and unbolt the governor and remove it and the fanshaft and leave the rad. alone.

Chances are REAL good that the gov. needs alot of work too !

Its been a longgggg ggg time since I did this so take this with a grain of salt. As I recall, on some?? models its possible to loosen the bottom radiator bolts to tilt the radiator far enough forward to remove the fan shaft out of the governor but I suggest to go ahead n bite the bullett and remove the radiator. I sure agree with DSK that its typical for the bevel gears to be worn causing excess fan backlash and/or whine so if you tear into her be prepared for worn bevel gears which need to be replaced with a matched set regardless if new or used and need to be set up right for proper heel mesh and backlash etc. Once inside theres the chance of worn governor end bearings and weight pins etc etc so be prepared. I doubt the clutch wear will cause immediate serious problems but its gonna need a new set of disks it sounds like.

While it is possible to remove the fan/friction clutch assembly from the tractor without pulling the radiator, save yourself some grief and some skin on your knuckles and remove the radiator, its not that tough. Your friction disks &fiber washers are probably shot anyway,so you can't really do alot more damage by running it for awhile yet. When you decide to tackle the project, I suggest you remove and dissasemble the complete fanshaft assembly, you'll probably find other parts which need replacement also. If for no other reason, it's good to take it apart to wash & repack the bearings. While you're at it, it would be a good idea to check the governor bearings also. Most A's of this vintage that I've worked on are worn quite a bit in this area. The tractor should be OK for a few months with the worn fan clutch, the proper repair would be a good winter project.
