I bought a 148 for my 4020 and I want to run it direct. It has the control value. What other parts will I need to run the hydraulics?

You need a couple hoses, a T to replace the elbow just in front of the brake pedals and a tranmission oil filter cap with a hole for the return oil. There's a part number for that in the 2640 parts book. I like a restricted flow valve on the pressure feed to keep from making the loader jerky from trying to flow 21 gpm at full loader valve opening when only 5 is plenty.

You also need steel inserts for the side bars on the tractor that aren't strong enough by themselves for the loader. Standard 148 loader parts.

Gerald, would you know the part numbers for what you mentioned. I looked at JDPARTS and wasn't exactly sure what to look for. Thanks for the help.

The T isn't probably in the 4020 parts book. I asked the local JD parts counter what the elbow was and what I got was odd. Cost me big bucks to special order the T and then it didn't fit and since the hydraulics shop ate the first one they ordered wrong they wouldn't take the second one back. As I recall, the elbow I took out was 3/4" o-ring male to 3/4" JIC female. Probably at the front end of the oil pipe going back to the rock shaft valve. In my parts book (before 200,999), that is AR27738. What you want to replace. And my JD dealer had the best selection of T's and the right one at a reasonable price. Take the elbow and match them up, don't guess.

The oil filter cover in my book is an R39794 (without mounting hardware) and without hole. I drilled and tapped 1/2" pipe thread. Some say shooting the return oil at the filter will destroy the filter. I've not yet looked and its been several years.

A fair to good JD parts type should be able to find the alternatives. It was a JD parts counter that told me about the oil filter cover from the 2640 with the added hole. Runs $40 to $60 as I recall so I drilled and tapped. I recall that the Deere hole is a large o-ring so it has to be adapted down to ordinary hoses. There are two oil filter covers on the power shift transmission and I don't know which one to replace with the return hose. I don't think it says in my 148 manuals either. They aren't handy right now.

I also hooked in a pair of male hose couplers for the return and a pair of female for the supply with separate needle valves so I can run back hoee and loader at the same time or take both off without having to take apart any pipe threads. With male and female on the implement ends then I just couple the implement hoses together to keep them clean.
