I started to rake hay with my 1010 JDeere and forgot to turn on the gas valve. I went about 100 yards and it quit running (imagine that) I turned the gas on and about 20 minutes later I got it started. It would fire then die. Like I said I got it started and got about half the hay raked and it died again with the gas valve on. It is diong the same thing- it will hit- you let off the key then it dies. I have gas going to the carb, and I backed the main needle valve out and had gas there. There was a little dirt in the sediment bowl, I cleaned it out. My guess is the float is stuck in the off position. Is this possible? Has anyone had this happen and what fixed it. Thanks Jjamna

I found the problem. It was not the carb at all. All the wireing under the dash had wrapped up on the steering shaft. I guess it was grounded enough not to let it run but it did try to start.
Thanks for all the input guy's, It is great to have this website so you can get input from other people

If your carb has a drain plug on the bottom, take it out and turn the gas on and see if you have a steady flow of gas - if not that has to be corrected for wherever the stoppage is.

on all my gas burner tractors i have a piece of stainless steel real fine mess wire rolled up and stuck down into the fuel outlet on the fuel strainer. it sticks up about an inch above the bottom of the tank and catches any trash before it gets to the sediment bowl, but mainly keeps any big pieces of trash from blocking the hole up going to the sediment bowl from inside the tank. it sounds like you sucked trash into the carb. take it off and clean it good. i hope you got your hay up. i have a 68 ford pickup with a 4 speed that has raked more hay than most tractors.

Tap the carb lightly with a hammer and see if it starts, mine does this every once in a while.

I tapped on it several times with a hitch pin, did not have a hammer available. It did not do any good. I am going to work on it tomorrow with more tools. I will try tapping again. My IT book only shows a Marvel-Schebler my tractor has a Zineth on it. Are the adjustments about the same?

There pretty easy to work on,you might just need a new needle and seat, the newer ones have a rubber tip on the needle valve. You usually don't have to mess with the settings if this is the only problem, there's just an idle and load adjustment. The idle mixture can be set after the engine warms up and at idle and the load when the engine is at wide open throttle, just turn the screw till it runs the best.
