Ive posted this e mail before on Veterans and Memorial Day but its worth repeating.

It is the VETERAN , not the preacher,

who has given us ! freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter,

who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN, not the poet,

who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer,

who given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer,

who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN, not the politician,

Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN,

who salutes the Flag,

It is the veteran,

who serves under the Flag,

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

I don't know if you saw this in the news but it really impressed me.
Funny, our US Senate/House took 2 days off as they couldn't work
because of the expected storm.

On the ABC evening news, it was reported tonight that, because of the
dangers from Hurricane Isabelle approaching Washington DC, the
military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment.

They respectfully declined the
offer, "No way, Sir!"

Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm,
they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment; it was
the highest honor that can be afforded to a serviceperson.

The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.

God Bless the them all!!!

Blessed Memorial Day to Yall

Great post John

I agree both with John and CPeter. To me supporting the troops has nothing to do with what the politicians do. I still think of the buds that I left back in SE Asia and get watery eyed when I salute the flag. I just don't understand how supporting the troops means we got to plod along in an untennable situation made on a political decision that could have been refuted by reading a couple of chapters in a book in any library.

SALUTE to our fallen comrads and all the TROOPS. I will always have deep feelings for the troops and support them.

Thanks John for posting that. I knew about the guards refusing to suspend their duties with the impending storm. I don't think too many Americans understand the dedication and committment that our military has. It might also be noted that of all the victorious nations in all of history, The USA has never claimed any territory, except just enought to bury our dead warriors in. Our mililtary has committed atrocities as have all other countries, but what separates us from other countries is that we will prosecute any such crimes. We are doing that in Iraq. The pressures placed upon our boys and girls is enormous but they still must be held to a standard that no other country in the world does. That is one reason why our country is the best that has ever been and probably ever will be. I salute our men and women in uniform and especially those that have paid the ultimate price to protect and preserve our freedom and our way of life.

Thanks for caring JohnT. I cannot understand how our people in Washington can keep on shrinking our VA benefits, and still sleep at nights. Your post is super!!

I watched the annual Memorial Day Concert from DC on PBS last night and afterward I said to my wife that I wished I had not seen it. It was very discouraging. I am a Vietnam Era Vet (with a "US" serial number) who got lucky and went to Alaska, but many friends were not as lucky. I lost my collage roommate and a school friend there. I fear for our future in this "war" that seems to be unwinable.

US and went to Alaska? in reply to CPeter, 05-29-2006 12:01:18
Tell me more! I was also "US" and also went to Alaska during Vietnam. Trained and planned in 171st Infantry Div. for deployment to Nam but that didn't happen while I was there. Any chance our paths crossed at Ft. Wainwright? 1966-'68.

Do not feel bad, In my point of view remenber.. All wars are fought at home behine a desk, and on the front line, It hurt in both places. The damage is done and we have to support the mission.
Let,s back our troops. & Hope Bush does not drag this out for the good of our families.
